Why monitor attendance?
If you measure and monitor student attendance using an electronic software system, students are more likely to turn up to lectures, tutorials and seminars. If attendance is good, the student and the academic benefit from better exam results and final degree results. Students are also more likely to stay with their course and be less tempted to ‘drop out.’ The Uni Nanny system indicates very early on any attendance issues and the student can be provided with extra support.

How does it work?
Workplaces have been using attendance monitoring software for a number of years. This is generally a ‘clocking in’ process where people visit a fixed unit which is positioned at a central point. This is impractical on large, dispersed campuses where there are several entry points to buildings. The Uni Nanny system is mobile and used within classrooms, thus eliminating queues and time-wasting registration procedures and the need for many fixed units across the university.
Attendance Management Research
Newman-Ford, Fitzgibbon, Lloyd and Thomas (2008) investigated the link between student attendance and attainment/progression using electronic UniNanny data, collected from 750 students. Results showed a strong, statistically significant correlation between learning event attendance and academic performance.
